Evidence Based Practice

According to the Journal of Nursing Administration, evidence-based practice (EBP) is a type of healthcare that uses the most up-to-date research to improve patient health and safety while lowering overall costs and minimizing variation in health outcomes (Chien, 2019).

The concept of evidence-based practice (EBP) states that occupational activities should be supported by scientific data. While the suggestion appears to be clear, it has sparked debate, with some claiming that the results may not be as tailored to individuals as traditional procedures. Since the formal introduction of evidence-based medicine in 1992, evidence-based methods have moved to allied health professions, education, business, law, public policy, architecture, and other sectors. In the wake of studies revealing flaws in scientific research (such as the replication crisis), there is a push to incorporate evidence-based approaches into scientific research. Metascience is the study of scientific conduct that is founded on evidence.

2

Components of evidence based Practices

evidence-based practice encompasses

the integration of best available data

clinical competence, and patient values and circumstances (Lehane et al., 2019).

Each of the components is equally vital.

In patient and client management, practice management, and health policy decision-making, evidence-based practice encompasses the integration of best available data, clinical competence, and patient values and circumstances. Each of the three components is equally vital.

Many of the issues and challenges to utilizing evidence-based practice concentrate around locating and applying research, despite the fact that evidence-based practice covers more than just applying the best available evidence. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) assists physical therapists and physical therapy assistants in finding and using evidence-based resources. Knowledge and Skills of Clinicians: The expertise and abilities of the physical therapist and physical therapist assistant are crucial to the evidence-based procedure. This personal scope of practice encompasses tasks performed by an individual physical therapist that are contained within the individual’s unique body of knowledge and for which the individual has been educated, trained, and competent. It’s crucial to use clinical judgment and decision-making.

Patient’s Desires and Requirements: Evidence-based care includes a focus on the patient’s wants and requirements. Incorporating a patient’s cultural perspectives, needs, and values into best practice services is a vital skill.

QUALITY METHODS IN HEALTHCARE

To resolve the issues of quality and safety in healthcare, a number of quality improvement methodologies can be employed.

In quality improvements, there are various methods which maybe utilizes as a basis for measurement however only two methods are prevalent in the healthcare industry and they are

Research improvement methods

measurement for improvement.

The health care industry is heavily reliant on the services they offer and with that in mind, there are several methodologies that can be used to improve the quality of medical care offered in the health care sector. The main methodologies are the research and measurement improvement methodologies.

PICOT Question

Can the use of quality methods improve health care delivery more than the lack of adoption of the methods in general patient population?

The acronym PICOT stands for patient, intervention, comparison, outcome, and (occasionally) time, which are all parts of a clinical research issue. The PICOT process starts with a case scenario and a question designed to elicit a response. The question must specify the patient or population to be studied, the intervention or treatment to be used, the comparison of one intervention to another (if relevant), and the expected outcome.

The PICOT question that will be used in the study focuses on revealing whether the use of quality methods as evidenced by their effectiveness in several health care settings is ideal for improving health care delivery.

The PICOT question is Can the use of quality methods improve health care delivery more than the lack of adoption of the methods in general patient population?

5

BASIC MODELS OF QUALITY IMPROVEMENT IN HEALTHCARE

In order to achieve success in the improvement of patient experiences, a number of quality improvement models may be applied. The three main methods include;

Six sigma- a model that capitalizes on getting rid of defects and variations in the health sector (Finkelman, 2017)..

LEAN- a method that helps in reducing wastage by emphasizing on efficiency

The Institute of Healthcare Improvement( IHI) Model- a model used for the general improvement in health care facilities.

There are three common models known for quality improvement in the healthcare sector. The first model is the six sigma model, a model that concentrates on the elimination of variance in the health sector. The second model is the LEAN model, a model that emphasizes efficiency specifically on reducing the wastage of resources. The last common model is the IHI or what is known as The Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Model. The model emphasizes the general improvement of the operations in a health care facility.

ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF PATIENT SATISFACTION

Similar to any other business entity, one of the major objectives of the for-profit healthcare facility is to realize profit and to do so, patient satisfaction is imperative (Tortorella et al., 2022). There are several main importance of patient satisfaction;-

Building loyalty.

Attraction and retention of both new and old patients-patients who have had a good experience are likely to inform others in need of similar services thus attracting new clients

Minimizing the risk of legal litigation.

Just in like in most businesses, for-profit healthcare centers, meeting the expectations as well as exceeding the expectations of patients helps in the profitability goals of a health institution. Understanding that patient satisfaction is a crucial thing in the health sector is an important thing. There are three main importance of patient satisfaction and the first importance is that patient satisfaction helps in building loyalty in patients; a patient who is satisfied by the services of a particular facility is bound to visit a specific healthcare facility rather than visit another different facility. The second importance of patient satisfaction is that it helps in the attraction and retention of both new and old patients. The third main importance of patient satisfaction is that it helps in reducing potential lawsuits against a health care facility.

7

Statistics on the quality improvement methods

LEAN- there has been an increase of 10% in the way the medical sector gets rid of defects and variations in the health sector from 2008 to 2018.

Six Sigma- between 2007 and 2017 there has been an increase of almost 6% in the reduction of wastage by emphasizing on efficiency.

The Institute of Healthcare Improvement( IHI) Model- the percentage of in-patient readmissions within 30 days of an acute hospital stay have reduced by almost 3% from18.2% to15.2% from 2007 to 2017

For the sake of knowing whether the methods or models of quality improvement are effective it is best to look at the statistics present on health. The LEAN method has had the biggest impact on quality improvement as the ways through which the medical sector gets rid of defects and variations in the health sector has improved by 10% from 2008 to 2018.

The six sigma follows closely in terms of quality improvement as there has been increase of 6% in terms of the in the reduction of wastage by emphasizing on efficiency. This is evidenced by the increase of patients receiving relevant medical care support even from home.

The IHI model has also seen an improvement in the quality of healthcare that patients receive. This is evidenced by the reduction of in-patient readmissions within 30 days of an acute hospital stay by almost 3%.

ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF PATIENT EXPERIENCE

There are four main importance of patient experience

Good patient experience is at times linked to good patient outcome.

Good patient experience is bound to increase the affiliate organization’s revenue (Finkelman , 2017)

A pleasing patient experience improves the reputation of a health care facility thus helps in the improving of ratings.

Good patient experience enhances patient engagement which means that even the families of the respective patients will at some point become engaged in their own healthcare status.

Good patient experience is important for four main reasons. The first main reason is that good patient experience is at times linked to good patient outcome; patients that have good experiences most of the time get proper and effective treatment for their conditions or ailments. The second importance of good customer experience is that it helps in increasing the revenue that a healthcare facility collects. The third main importance of good patient experience is that it helps in improving the reputation of a healthcare facility and for that reason influences the ratings of a healthcare facility. The last main importance of good customer experience is that enhances patient engagement which means that even the families of the respective patients will at some point become engaged in their own healthcare status.

APPLICATION OF QUALITY IMPROVEMENT METHODS

In order to ascertain whether changes made in quality improvement bring about any improvements, various measurements are applied. The models of quality measurement are employed in the following ways.

The model for improvement functions by asking three basic questions which are; what is the organization trying to accomplish? how will the change be realized as an improvement and what changes should be made to lead to an improvement?

The six sigma methodology performs the functions of analyzing, defining, measuring and controlling the processes in existence. Additionally, it performs the tasks of designing and verifying the new processes that have been established.

The lean method functions by putting emphasis on the value for patients hence bringing about improvement.
